Notes
During the war, the town that Ian was born in had a Ghetto housing 10,000 Jews, only 400 of which survived. Initially allocated to the Soviet Ukraine in the 1939 carve up of Poland by Germany and Russia. Later taken by German troops on their advance to Moscow, it was liberated by Russian troops on 6 Aug 1944. Following the war, the town was formally annexed to the Ukraine.
