Prior to enlistment in 1942 his marital status changed to divorced. Jan had qualified as a lawyer and had an economics degree prior to arrival in Australia.

On 11 July 1942 at Armadale, Jan enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps, and was allocated to the 12th (Jarrah) VDC Battalion. On 7 Feb 1944 Jan was allocated a new Army number of W61905 before being transferred to reserve on 31 Jul 1944.

Notes

Military records use the forename Ian, while other records Jan. During the war, the town that Ian was born in had a Ghetto housing 10,000 Jews, only 400 of which survived. Initially allocated to the Soviet Union in the 1939 carve up of Poland by Germany and Russia. Later taken by German troops on their advance to Moscow, it was liberated by Russian troops on 6 Aug 1944. Following the war, the town was formally annexed to the Ukraine.
