On 8 Jul 1942 John was posted to [[No. 4 Medical Receiving Station RAAF]] where on 1 Sep 1942 he was promoted Acting Sergeant and then on 29 Dec 1942 he was posted to [[No. 2 Embarkation Depot RAAF]] at Bradfield Park preparatory for overseas service. He remained there employed as a Pay Clerk until the conclusion of hostilities in Europe. During this time he was promoted on 1 Feb 1946 to Temporary Flight Sergeant. On 1 Nov 1945 John began his journey home by being posted to [[No. 11 Personnel Despatch & Receiving Centre RAAF]] in Bournemouth, and on 28 Dec 1945 he was posted to [[No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF]], where he was discharged on 20 Feb 1946 with 72 day's pay in lieu of leave.
