On 5 Apr 1944 John enlisted in the RAAF at the No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre, mustered as Air Crew V. The same day he was sent to No. 5 Initial Training School RAAF at Clontarf. On 3 Aug 1944 with inital training completed he was appointed as a Leading AIrcraftman, mustered as Air Crew II (P) and posted to No. 9 Elementary Flying Training School RAAF at Cunderdin to undertake the next stage of his training.


However, he was then sent on 28 Dec 1944 to No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF in Subiaco, and on 29 Jan 1945 moved again to No. 4 Personnel Depot RAAF at Springbank. On 9 Feb 1945 he was posted to the Special Aircrew Camp at Renmark in South Australia, moving to Melbourne when he joined the No. 2 Transport & Movement Office] on 19 Mar 1945.


On 2 Aug 1945 John was posted to No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF in Perth and was discharged from the RAAF on 3 Aug 1945 at his onwn request as being surplus to present personnel requirements.

Post War

Married in Katanning's Catholic Church on 30 Jan 1960 to Helen May Harrison a 22 year old School Teacher. He was living at 18 Austral terrace in Katanning. They had a son Michael John, and two other children.
