War Service

John enlisted at the No. 4 Recruit Depot RAAF on 14 Apr 1942 and mustered as a Guard. Following the basic drill training John was posted on 3 May 1942 to RAAF Base Pearce. Soon after, on 27 May 1942 he was transferred to No. 4 Embarkation Depot RAAF in South Australia, and three months later on 28 Aug 1942 his posting changed to No. 4 Service Flying Training School RAAF at Geraldton. On 14 Oct 1942 John was promoted to Leading Aircraftsman, and was granted Special Leave from 7 Dec 1942 until 4 Nar 1943. During this posting, from 10 - 23 Sep 1943, John was detached to 77 Operational Base Unit following completion of the No. 2 WA Guards Course.

John was transferred on 10 Feb 1943 to the No. 35 Squadron RAAF at Maylands, remaining with them until 22 Aug 1944. During that time he was detached on 24 Jan 1944 to the No. 5 Embarkation Depot RAAF, returning to his unit on 7 Feb 1944.
