War Service
Soon after entering camp Patrick was allocated to the 13th reinforcement draft for the 10th Light Horse Regiment and travelled with them to Egypt where he was taken in by the 3rd Light Horse Brigade Reserve until 1 Jul 1916 when he was transferred to the 11th Company of the 3rd Battalion of the Imperial Camel Corps.
On 5 Nov 1916 he sought treatment from the Nottinghamshire & Derby Field Ambulance, and returned to his unit 3 days later. However, on 26 Nov 1916 he again required treatment from them, and on 2 Dec 1916 he was admitted to 17th General Hospital in Alexandria with malaria. He spent a few days with the British Red Cross Hospital in Montazah before being released to base depot on 22 Jan 1917. On 28 Jan 1917 he had rejoined his unit.
Wounded in Action on 19 Apr 1917 during an unsuccessful attempt to capture Turkish positions near Gaza. One of 345 casualties in the Camel Corps alone. With a bullet wound to both legs, Patrick had the bullet removed from his left calf by the 26th Casualty Clearing Station before being admitted to the 24th Stationary Hospital in the Sinai and then on 24 Apr 1917 to the 14th Australian General Hospital at Abbassia. Released to duty on 10 Jun 1917.
On 26 Jun 1917 Patrick was charged with "While on Active Service' (1) breaking camp (2) AWOL from 1600 hours (4:00pm) 26 Jun 1917 until apprehended by Military Police at 2115 hours (9:45pm) the same day (3)improperly dressed in that he was wearing slacks and no belt. Deprived of 3 days pay and fined 15/- ($1.50). Returned to the 3rd Battalion on 5 Jul 1917, but on 25 Aug 1917 was hospitalised with the Australian Camel Field Hospital until 9 Sep 1917 with malaria.
Transferred to the 15th Light Horse Regiment on 1 Jul 1918, he was Driver until 1 Dec 1918 when he reverted to Private.
Prior to discharge was treated by the 26th Australian Auxiliary Hospital in Fremantle (RAGA Barracks) where on 18 Aug 1919 he was deemed to be non-infectious and suitable for discharge. Discharged on 10 Oct 1919 by the 5th Military District.
