Enlisted in the RAAF at [[No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre]] 30 Oct 1941 as a Trainee Grade V, he undertook No 49 Drill Course at [[No. 4 School of Technical Training RAAF]] in North Adelaide from 24 Nov 1941 to 23 Jan 1942, while almost simultaneously completing the No 124 Trainee Technical Fitter Course from 24 Nov 1941 to 23 Jan 1942. Ronald was then posted to the [[No. 1 Engineering School RAAF]] at Ascot Vale in Melbourne to participate in the No 142 Technical Mechanics Course from 1 Feb -17 Apr 1942. Following training on 18 Apr 1942 he qualified as a Flight Mechanic, and on 28 Apr 1942 Ronald was transferred to [[No. 4 Service Flying Training School RAAF]] at Geraldton, where he was appointed a Leading Aircraftman on 18 Jul 1942.
