Pre War

War Service

After three months at Blackboy Hill camp, Sid was allocated to the 19th reinforcement draft for the 16th Battalion and travelled with them to England as an acting Corporal. On arrival in England he was sent to the 4th Training Battalion at Codford on 25 Sep 1916 for war preparedness training. At Codford he overstayed a leave by 4 days for which he was reduced to Private and he forfeited 5 days pay.

On 28 Nov 1916 Sid proceeded overseas to France through Folkestone onboard SS Princess Henriette. He then joined the 16th Battalion on 16 Dec 1916 as it moved from Ribemont to Cardonette for reorganisation and specialist training. From 5 - 15 Apr 1917 Sid was treated by the 4th Field Ambulance for scabies, and was again hospitalised on 1 Apr 1918 with an accidental injury to his hand (deformed right thumb) which occurred near Herberteun in France. He was in the 22nd General Hospital at Dannes Camiers from 4 - 7 Apr 1918. The injury became septic and required him to be evacuated on 7 Apr 1918 to England aboard the HS Princesse Elisabeth where he was admitted to the Fort Pitt Military Hospital. On recovering he was sent to No. 1 Command Depot as the injury prevented him from rejoining the battalion.

In June 1918 Sid spent two days in the Bulford Hospital, otherwise known as the 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, and then spent the next six months bouncing from one base unit in England to another before on 7 Jan 1919 when Sid was taken on strength by the Australian Army Pay Corps. Soon after he was promoted to Corporal. On 30 Sep 1919 he was detached to his old unit in order to travel home with them. Back in Australia he disembarked in Melbourne, and was discharged by the 3rd Military District in Melbourne on 26 Feb 1920.
