Enlisted on 31 Aug 1943 as an Aircraftsman level 1 and mustered as Carpenter II

On 11 Sep 1943 he was posted to No.4 Recruiting Depot before being sent to RAAF Base Pearce Headquarters on 16 Oct 1943. On 18 Dec 1943 this was changed to No. 7 Communication Unit RAAF. The Communication Flights were involved in ferrying passengers and the occasional aircraft around Australia and New Guinea.   • co-operation and communication flights for both Australian Army and the Royal Australian Navy,
  • ferrying parts and equipment,

  • occasional medical evacuations.
