The 1901 Census lists 7 siblings in addition to John and his parents living at Snaggs Hall, Ewhurst, Sussex. When the 1911 English Census was taken, John was still living with his parents, along with two sisters. Nine other siblings were not at the address, two of whom had died pre census.
Bill served during WW1 with the 16th Battalion Bennet William John, enlisting on 25 Sep 1916 while living in Pingelly. He arrived in Devonport, England on 29 Apr 1917 aboard HMAT A28 Miltiades, and proceeded to France on 23 Jul 1917, joining up with the 16th Battalion on 12 Aug 1917.
