Brief History
The Queensland Railways converted a train set for use as an Ambulance train in 1941 and the matching unit was raised at Enoggera to operate it from February 1942. Based at Mayne Junctions and at the Bundamba Siding, it worked the 3'6" gauge lines in South Queensland, with regular travel to Townsville to recover patients from hospital ships. The patients were delivered to Wallangarra where they were transferred to the 2nd Australian Ambulance Train. When the 5th Australian Ambulance Train was reactivated in June 1944 to work the main line, '1st Australian Ambulance Train focused on the southern Queensland network. Withthe reduction of work, the train was returned to Queensland Railways in April 1945 and the unit disbanded in May.
