Brief History

2nd Armoured Brigade Group Ordnance Workshop was formed at Puckapunyal in September 1941. The units of the 1st Armoured Division gathered near Narrabri in NSW for training during July 1942, the workshop moved to Greta and then in August to Wee Waa. In October a re-organisation of armoured units saw the unit combined with the 2nd Armoured Brigade Group Ordnance Sub Park and other elements to form the 2nd Australian Armoured Group Ordnance Company.

When workshop elements transferred to the AEME Corps the company was split to form 2nd Armoured Brigade Workshop and 2nd Armoured Brigade Ordnance Field Park. The workshops moved to Manumbar in Queensland during February, and then to Wondai in August. With little threat to southern Queensland the 3rd Armoured Division was being dispersed and the unit absorbed 245th LAD and was re-organised as 2/4th Australian Armoured Regiment Workshop in October and accompanied the 2/4th Armoured Regiment that was then transferring to 4th Armoured Brigade Group and prepared for tropical service.

The workshops moved to Southport in January 1944 before moving to Madang in New Guinea in September with a detachment of the workshops moving with C Squadron of the Armoured Regiment to Aitape in November, and B Squadron of the Regiment to Bougainville in December. In May 1945 the remainder of the workshops moved to Bougainville with detachments working with the squadrons both north and south of Torokina until the end of the war.
