Brief History

Believed to have been formed at Bathurst (NSW) during April 1942 from earlier 2nd Division training units operating in Tamworth from 1940. It had 19, 20 and 34 Companies (CMF) and 2/1st Pioneer Company (2nd AIF) to train reinforcments for similarly numbered battalions. The return of the 6th Infantry Division from Egypt caused changes with the 16th Australian Infantry Training Battalion now responsible for providing all AIF reinforcments.

28th Australian Infantry Training Battalion (28th ITB) moved to Dubbo where it was responsible for the training of personnel from battalions of the 28th Australian Infantry Brigade. With recruit training concentrated at Cowra in October 1943, the 28th Infantry Training Battalion moved to Greta where it concentrated on advanced infantry training. Further rationalisation of training units occurred in July 1944 which saw the 28th ITB move to Bathurst, and then finally in March 1945 to Greta.
