Brief History

The 2nd Australian Army Troops Company was formed in Sydney in late 1939 and mobilised at Narellan in December 1941. (Troops Companies comprised three construction sections, as well as two electrical & mechanical sections which could operate and maintain power and water supply systems in addition to manning a workshop to provide equipment repairs).

They carried out construction and maintenance work around the Syney area until July 1943 when they moved to Alice Springs, with a detachment at Mount Isa in Queensland, as well as outposts along the convoy routes. In October they moved to Katherine in October and then to Noonamah in November. In early 1944 they undertook preparatory work on staging bases to accommodate the two divisions of troops that were intended to invade Ambon in the Neterlands East Indies (NEI). Then in October 1944 the unit moved to Groverly in Queensland and in December to Strathpine.

In February 1945 the 2nd Australian Army Troops Company moved to Lae where they maintained the base facilities until the end of the war.
