Brief History

The 5th Fortress Company AAMC was raised in late 1940 to service the mainland gun batteries, with the Rottnest Island batteries serviced by the Camp Hospital Rottnest. In December 1941 they were fully mobilised at Artillery Barracks, Fremantle following Japan's entry into the war, and in January 1942 they moved to Keanes Point, and then to Claremont in April 1942, operating an Advanced Dressing Station for all units in the Fremantle area. In September 1942 they were re-organised as 60th Australian Camp Hospital with 30 bed capacity until October 1943 when reduced troop numbers in Western Australia saw them absorbed into the 40th Australian Camp Hospital in Perth.
