Brief History

The designation of this unit 68th Australian DCRE works was allocated in September 1942, but the unit itself was not raised until November when it was established in Perth under the command of 10th Australian CRE (Works), but then moved to Fremantle to service works projects in the Fremantle Fortress. In February 1944 with the 10 CRE (Works) moving to the Northern Territory, and replaced by 3rd CRE (Works) resulted in a change of report line, to 3rd CRE (Works) With the departure of 67th Australian DCRE (Works) to Melbourne in September and the 69th Australian DCRE (Works) to Sydney in October, the 68th Australian DCRE (Works) took over their workload in the Perth metropolitan area. In June 1945 they moved to Karrakatta where they remained for the rest of the war.
