Brief History

Authorised in January 1942, it was not until January 1943 that the 8th Australian Filed Bakery was formed from part of the 1st Field Bakery at Keatings Bakery in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. A section moved to Townsville in February to take over a US bakery and another section moved to Atherton in March. In April the unit's headquarters moved to Townsville where they too over the 1 Field Bakery detachments at Charters Towers, Iron range, Portland Roads, Jack Jacky and Thursday Island. The Atherton section transferred out to 3 Feild bakery, and in July the Torres Strait detachments transferred to the 15th Field bakery in July.


Continuing to bake in Townsville, Charters Towers and Iron Range, in March 1944 reorganization of he bakery units saw the formation of the HQ 8TH Australian Field Baking Company and the 22 Australian Field Baking Platoon at Townsville along with the 23rd Australian Field Baking Platoon which had detachments at Iron Range and Charters Towers. The Iron Range detachment was withdrawn in September 1944 and 23rd Australian Field Baking Platoon left for the Northern Territory in January 1945. With the decrease in troop numbers in the Townsville area, the unit was in the process of moving to Brisbane to be disbanded when the war ended.
