Brief History

With the decision to bring Italian POWs to Western Australia from India, the 8th POW Guard Company was formed, primarily from 5th Australian Garrison Battalion personnel. They manned the Marrinup Prisoner of War Camp (Camp No 16) which opened in August 1943. With many of the POWs released to live and work on farms, they were monitored by out posted 8th POW Guard Company personnel based at Bridgetown (W1), Korenup (W2), Darkan (W3), Kojanup (W4), Tambellup (W5), Wagin (W6) and Popanyinning (W7). In May 1944, the task changed with a new unit 5th POW Control Company taking over the supervision of out posted POWs and the 8th POW Guard Company staff beign reabsorbed into the Marrinup POW Camp.
