Brief History

This unit was raised at the Sydney Showgrounds during February 1942 to provide heavy maintenance of armoured vehicles of 1 Armoured Division, with sections raised in Victoria and Western Australia. When the Division undertook training in the Narrabri area the workshops moved to Boggabri in August and then to Baan Baa in September. A reduced workshop moved to Western Australia with the 1st Armoured Division in December 1942.

With the development of a separate RAEME Corps in December the unit became 1 Armoured Troops Workshop AEME. They were in Morowa during January 1943 before moving to Mingenew in March, and to Moora in August. HQ1 Armoured Division was disbanded in September 1943, and the workshop was then attached to 1 Armoured Brigade Group With little threat to Western Australia, the unit moved first to Werribee near Northam in June 944, then to Nungarin in October to work on the tanks returned to 7 Advanced Ordnance Depot. The workshops moved to Chermside in Queensland in December where they were disbanded in early 1945.
