Brief History

This unit was formed in August 1945 at Camp Pell in Victoria to recover POWs held in Malaya, and elsewhere in south east Asia. They moved to Kandy in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in August and to Singapore in September along with 5th POW Reception Camp, 6th POW Reception Camp, and the 2nd POW Contact and Enquiry Unit. It contained fifteen POW Contact Teamsresponsible for locating POWs and transfering them to the Reception Camps.


Their work was supported by 2/14th Australian Genral Hospital, 5th Army Troops Company, 2/2nd Field Baking Platoon, 87th Dental Unit, 2nd POW Reception Group Poistal Unit, 21st Independant Provisions Platoon, 109th Depot Cash Office and detachments from other units. After completing their role they returned to Australia and were disbanded in early 1946.
