Brief History

Prior to this unit being established in July 1942 troops in the Northern territory were serviced by a detachments from 4th Military District at Alice Springs and Larrimah. They were used to form the NT Force Canteens in July 1942 with their main bulk store at Adelaide River, and others at Winnellie, Larrimah and Alice Springs in addition to canteens in all main bases. By March 1943 they had added facilities at Vesteys, Berry Springs, Noonamah, Pine Creek, Mataranka, Katherine, Daly Waters, and Mt Isa (Qld). They also operated aerated water factories at Alice Springs, Katherine, Adelaide River, Noonamah and Darwin.

Reorganised in September 1943 they had 15 officers and 339 men, and in February 1944 were renamed Northern Territory Detachment, Australian Army Canteens Service, but by late 1944 the number of troops in the Northern Territory were in decline and by war's end in August 1945 the only detachments still operating were at Darwin, Noonamah, Adelaide River, Larrimah, Barrow Creek, Banka and Alice Springs.
