Brief History

Cressy Airfield near Hamilton, Victoria became operational in July 1939 when the Armament Training Squadron moved there. On 13 December 1943 the Armament School relocated from Hamilton to the Nhill airfield. The first course commenced the following day.

It was renamed as the Air Armament School on 15 January 1944 before being later renamed to the Air Armament and Gas School. The school at its peak comprised 688 personnel. Their aircraft comprised 3 Beauforts, 6 Avro Ansons, 3 Wirraways and 1 Moth Minor.

The RAAF Air Base at Nhill officially closed in 1946, prompting the auction of the equipment and buildings.
