Brief History

No. 55 Operational Base Unit was formed on 20 May 1942, at Birdum, Northern Tenitory, 500 kms douth east of Darwin. The appointed unit commander was killed in an air acident en route to Birdum, necesitating a further appointment, with little taking place before the new CO arrived on 4 Jun 1942.

No. 55 Operational 8ase Unit was to administer and maintain a camp area for accommodating the various sections of a base and to provide accommodation for No. 2 Base PersonnelStaff Office. The activities of the operational base were headquarters, general administration, and commuicatin with Darwin, Adelaide, Perth, Townsville, Melbourne and operational landing grounds They also controlled the movement of stores and RAAF personnel north through Larrimah. They maintained bomb and fuel dumps, and maintenance of aircraft using the local landing facilitiess.


On 16 January 1944 the Unit moved to Gorrie in the Northern Territory, and it was disbanded on 31 Mar 1946.
