On 1 May 1942 he transferred to the 5th Australian Garrison Battalion at Swanbourne, and on 27 Aug 1942 he was appointed Lance Corporal. On 14 Feb 1944 Roy was admitted to the 118th Australian General Hospital at Northam with a lacerated left hip and haematoma to the left thigh from an accident while on duty. He was deemed to not have been negligent, and he returned to his unit on 25 Feb 1944.
