Pre War

From 1929 until 1936 he attended the Byford State School and from 1936 to 1938 Gordon was a student of the Perth Junior Technical School, reaching 8th Standard. He had worked on local farms near his family's farm and was engaged at the State Brick Works in Byford at the time of his enlistment. His enlistment document indicates that he had served in the local Voluntary Defence Corps unit for 12 months.

War Service

Gordon enlisted in the RAAF on 28 Apr 1942 at the No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre, mustered as a Guard, and was posted the same day to No. 4 Recruit Depot RAAF. Following a basic drill course ending on 19 May 1942, he was posted on 29 May 1942 to No. 2 Bombing & Gunnery School RAAF at Port Pirie in South Australia. From there, on 12 Jun 1942 he was posted briefly to No. 30 Squadron RAAF. Then, on 9 Aug 1942 he was transferred to No. 5 Aircraft Depot RAAF at Forrest Hill near Wagga Wagga in New South Wales. On 25 Nov 1942 Gordon was appointed a Leading Aircraftman.

On 30 Dec 1942 Gordon was posted to No. 1 Fighter Wing Headquarters RAAF at Richmond in New South Wales, before joining No. 452 Squadron RAAF at Strauss airfield south of Darwin on 30 Apr 1943. He was sent to Morotai withthe Security Guard Unit on 1 Jun 1943, returning to the Northern Territory on 27 Jun 1944 where he joined the No. 55 Operational Base Unit at Gorrie. On 17 Jul 1944 Gordon was posted to No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF in Perth.

On 27 Aug 1944 Gordon joined the No. 4 Stores Depot RAAF at Maylands, but On 5 Oct 1944 Gordon was reassigned, to the No. 9 Elementary Flying Training School RAAF at Cunderdin. On 7 Mar 1945 he was sent to No. 4 Transport & Movements Office RAAF and while there he was promoted Acting Corporal on 1 Jun 1945. Then on 21 Jul 1945 he was again sent to Morotai where he joined No. 3 Reserve Personnel Pool RAAF briefly before being posted on 15 Aug 1945 to the No. 2 Airfield Defence Squadron RAAF. He was transferred to Labuan and the No. 5 Airfield Construction Squadron RAAF from 6 Oct 1945 until 19 Oct 1945 when he retunred to Morotia and the No. 3 Reserve Personnel Pool RAAF. With hostilities over, he was posted back to No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF's dicharge Section in Perth on 11 Nov 1945 where he was discharged on 19 Nov 1945 as he was needed to return to his civilian employment.
