WW 1 Service

Soon after entering camp, George was allocated to the 10th Light Horse Regiment's 10th reinforcement draft, travelling with it to Egypt where he entered the 3rd Light Horse Brigade Training Regiment.

In Egypt, on 24 Jul 1916 George reported to the 3rd Light Horse Brigade Field Ambulance with hearing problems. Referred on to the 54th Casualty Clearing Station who treated him before releasing him back to his unit on 4 Aug 1916. On 26 Nov 1916 he again visited the 3rd Light Horse Brigade Field Ambulance with boils, before being discharged back to duty on 2 Dec 1916. On 18 Mar 1917 he was again in hospital, this time the 24th Stationary Hospital, followed 4 days later when he was admitted to the 31st General Hospital in Port Said. He was transferred on 24 Mar 1917 to the 14th Australian General Hospital in Abbassia. It seems he had developed severe abrasions to one of his feet that had become septic. On 1 May 1917 he was released to a convalescent depot at Montazah and finally returned to duty on 16 May 1917 at Moascar.

Taken on strength by the 10th Light Horse Regiment on 4 Aug 1917 at Marakeb, on 23 Aug 1917 he was detached to a Railway Construction Company until 20 Aug 1918.

On 10 Jun 1919, George was embarked at Port Said on HMT Ellenga for leave in the UK. Following this leave he was held in the UK until he boarded HMNZT Pakeha for return it Australia where he was discharged on 16 Dec 1919 by the 5th Military District.

WW 2 Service

On 22 Mar 1942 George enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps at Armadale (W67690), where on 31 Jul 1942 he was appointed Lieutenant, a Platoon Commander in 'D' Company of the 2nd (Fremantle) VDC Battalion. He undertook two training courses, both at the 3rd Australian Corps School at Harvey, the second course from 5 - 25 Jun 1943 being a Company Commander's School which he passed. On 31 Jan 1945 George resigned his appointment and reverted to Private before transferring to the 12th (Jarrah) VDC Battalion on 24 Feb 1945 at Pinjarra. On 15 Oct 1945 George was formally struck off strength.

Post War

A recent (2 Nov 1921) quiet wedding was that of Miss Susan Caroline Chapman, third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. Chapman, of Belfast, Ireland, to Mr. William George Lyster, of Spring Farm, Jarrahdale.

Three sons resulted John Charles (1923 - 1985), George Ralph (1925 - 2004) and Norman Grenville (1926 - 1995). Caroline died in 1992.
