War Service
From 8 Apr 1942 until 17 May 1942 Andrew was a member of the CMF's part time forces. On 18 May 1942 he commenced full time service posted to the 5th Labour Company who was detached to the ESB at Springhill from 22 Aug - 4 Sep 1942. With his unit, Andrew moved to Queensland where on 15 Oct 1942 they boarded HMT 1850 in Townsville for Port Moresby, disembarking on 17 Oct 1942. The unit was then renamed 5th Australian Employment Company.
On 16 Jan 1943 Andrew was transferred to the HQ New Guinea Force. On 17 Mar 1943 Andrew was found to be underage (18) and was transferred to 1st ACRC for return to Australia, and on 19 Mar 1943 he boarded HMT Duntroon in Port Moresby for Townsville, disembarking on 22 Mar 1943. Andrew was sent back to Western Australia until he was qualified age wise to serve in New Guinea. While there, on 13 May 1943 he was charged with having been AWOL from 1:00pm 13 May 1943 until 2:00pm on 18 May 1943. He forfeited 6 days pay and was fined £5 ($10). On 16 Jun 1943, he boarded HMT Duntroon in Townsville for Port Moresby, and after disembarking there on 20 Jun 1943, he rejoined HQ New Guinea Force on 21 Jun 1943. He qualified for Proficiency Pay from 1 Jul 1943.
On 4 Dec 1943 Andrew was charged with neglecting to obey a Camp Order, and was awarded a 10/- fine ($1). On 15 Apr 1944 he and his unit boarded HMT Taroona for Townville which they reached on 17 Apr 1944. Following leave, on 6 May 1944 Andrew was posted to HQ New Guinea Force Rear Details. On 28 Sep 1944 Andrew transferred to HQ 1st Australian Army and on 11 Oct 1944 he boarded SS Ormiston in Cairns for Port Moresby where he disembarked on 14 Oct 1944.
His records tell us nothing about his latest stay in New Guinea other than that he had made his way to Lae with his unit and on 24 May 1945 he boarded HMT Katoomba in Lae for Sydney, disembarking there on 2 Jun 1945. On 24 Jun 1945 he was transferred to the 8th Australian Supply Depot Company in Western Australia, arriving there on 5 Jul 1945. Andrew was admitted to the 75th Australian Camp Hospital on 23 Aug 1945, and discharged to duty on 27 Aug 1945. On 22 Mar 1946 Andrew was transferred to the HQ 8th Australian Anti Aircraft & Fortress Company who passed him on the same day to Fixed Defences Fremantle. Four months later, on 12 Jul 1946 it was his turn for discharge and he transferred to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot where he was discharged on discharged on 17 Jul 1946.
