War Service
Within a month of entering Blackboy Hill camp, Albert was allocated to the 6th reinforcement draft for the 12th Battalion.
He joined the 12th Battalion on 16 Jun 1915 at Anzac Cove, and he was wounded on 7 Aug 1915 in the battle for Lone Pine. Albert's unit had moved into the captured Turkish trenches to reinforce the 1st Brigade who were taking heavy casualties. The fighting was a combination of hand to hand and bombing of those who manned barricades in the trenches.
Albert suffered bomb wounds to his right shoulder and arm and he was evacuated on the HMT Caledonia in its hospital ship form to 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station on 7 Aug 1915 and then to the 1st Australian General Hospital at Heliopolis in Egypt (10 Aug 1915). Australian casualties over a four day period numbered 2,277.
Albert was transferred to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital on 2 Oct 1915 and sent back to Australia on 20 Oct 1915 as medically unfit.
Discharged 5th Military District 15 Nov 1916.
Post War
Electoral Roll entries - 1925 - 37 an orchardist living in Albany road, Kelmscott. 1943 Mary remains in Kelmscott. In 1934 only, school teacher Elsie Alberta has joined them [b.1911 Leederville]. In 1936 - 1954 Nell is also listed [b.1914 Canning], a clerk) Mary died in 1957 aged 70. In 1958 Nell, a ledger machinist is still in Albany Highway, Kelmscott. Albert attended the 19th RSL Congress representing the Kelmscott Sub-branch.
On May 19, 1940, at his late residence, Albany-road, Kelmscott, called suddenly home, Albert Stephenson, the dearly beloved husband of Mary Matilda Jackson, fond and loving father of Elsie, Nell, and Trix; aged 55 years.[1]JACKSON.--The Friends of the late Albert Stephenson Jackson (No. 1963. Pte. 12th Batt., 3rd. Inf. Bgde., A.I.F.). late of Albany-road, Kelmscott, dearly loved husband of Mary M. Jackson. loving father of Elsie, Nell and Trix, are respectfully informed that a Church of England service will be held In the Crematorium Chapel, Karrakatta, at 2 o'clock THIS (Tuesday) AFTERNOON The Cortege is appointed to leave the Service Chapel of Messrs. C. H. Smith and Co., 281 Newcastle-street, Perth, at 1.30 o'clock Friends attending the Funeral may proceed by the 1.30 o'clock train leaving Perth and the 12.14 o'clock train leaving Kelmscott.[2]
