Pre War

Prior to arrival in Australia, Arthur had served with the Manchester Regiment (Colour Sergeant) for 9 years.

War Service

After a brief period of training in Egypt, he joined his unit on 7th May 1915 at Anzac Cove. On 8 Aug 1915 at Lone Pine Arthur was wounded with bomb wounds to his buttocks. Treated first by the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station and evacuated the next day to the 3rd Australian Field Ambulance at Mudros, where after examination he was transferred to No 15 Stationary Hospital at Mudros. Transferred to a rest camp on 23 Aug 1915, his health required him to be sent on to No.2 Southern General Hospital in Bristol where he arrived on 2 Oct 1915.

His records for the period Oct 1915 to Jun 1916 lack details, but he rejoined his unit on 27 Nov 1915 at Mudros. It is assumed that he travelled with the 12th Battalion to France aboard the HMT Corsican during the first week of Jun 1916, but that very soon after his arrival in France, he was affected by shelling, being admitted with shell shock to the 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital in Harefield Park on 14 Jun 1916, before transferring to Monte Video Camp in Weymouth on 20 Jun 1916.

Four days later he embarked at Portland on the 'Euripidies' for the return journey to Australia, arriving on 1 Aug 1916.

He was discharged at 5th Military District on 5th Dec 1916 as unfit for further service due to his bomb wounds and shell shock.

Post War

The 1916 electoral roll lists him as a dairy farmer at West Armadale, 1918 and 1922 as a schoolmaster at Port Hedland, while the 1925 roll has him a teacher at Ellis Creek in the south west, before moving to Arino later that year.

From 1934 until his death he is registered at 113 Bagot road Subiaco, but without an occupation - He was invalided home in 1916 so may have been on invalid pension from that point on. No record of any marriage.
