Prior to his arrival in Australia, Arthur had served with the Manchester Regiment (Colour Sergeant) for 9 years.
War Service
Arthur entered Blackboy Hill camp on 5 Jan 1915 and after 6 weeks training was sent to Egypt with the 3rd reinforcement draft for the 12th Battalion. After a brief period of training in Egypt, he joined his unit on 7th May 1915 at Anzac Cove. On 8 Aug 1915 at Lone Pine, Arthur was wounded with bomb wounds to his buttocks. Treated first by the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station and evacuated the next day to the 3rd Field Ambulance at Mudros. Following an examination he was transferred to the 15th Stationary Hospital at Mudros. On 23 Aug 1915 Arthur was released to a rest camp on at Mudros, before being evacuated to Egypt where on 4 Sep 1915 he was admitted to the Red Cross Convalescent Hospital at Montazah, Alexandria. Post War
The 1916 electoral roll lists him as a dairy farmer at West Armadale, 1918 and 1922 as a schoolmaster at Port Hedland, while the 1925 roll has him a teacher at Ellis Creek in the south west, before moving to Arino later that year.
From 1934 until his death he is registered at 113 Bagot road Subiaco, but without an occupation - He was invalided home in 1916 so may have been on invalid pension from that point on. No record of any marriage.
