On 23 Dec 1941 he was called up for full time duty, Trade Grouped as an Orderly. On 6 Nov 1943 he was transferred to the 75th Australian Camp Hospital, and was detached for a few weeks at a time to units such as 451 Heavy Anti Aircraft Battery (8 - 15 Nov 1943), 19th Garrison Battalion (17 Jul - 2 Nov 1944) and 37th Australian Camp Hospital (5 - 20 Nov 1944). The next day he was transferred to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for re-assignment.
