Pre War

War Service

Entered camp on 24 Jan 1916 and three weeks later was allocated to the 16th reinforcement draft for the 11th Battalion.

Sent to Egypt to complete his training, he first reported sick on 16 May 1916 and was admitted to the 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital at Heliopolis on 20 May 1916, suffering with Tuberculosis. Released on 25 May 1916 to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital who then placed him with a Convalescent Hospital to await a ship home.

On 5 Jul 1916 he was sent back to Australia from Suez for a medical discharge. Discharged by 5th Military District, 15 Apr 1917 - Tubercular disease. Died 8 Mar 1918.


Post War

"...developed lung trouble and was six months in the hospital in Cairo. Now an inmate of Menzies Hospital, Perth.[1]

Never recovered from his TB and died aged 25. Parents were Charles, (a gardener) and Hannah who lived on "Winkfield Farm" in Beenup. Herbert was buried in the Anglican section of Karrakatta Cemetery.
