On 26 Jan 1939 John enlisted with the 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment ww2 part time, having previously served with them as a Trooper between 1937 and 1938, but had resigned when he left the district. On 29 Mar 1941 he was discharged - Reserved Occupation. He enlisted again in the CMF on 26 Mar 1942 with Army Number W468. John was posted to the 22nd Army Field Company, and on 9 Apr 1942 he was called up for full time duty.
On 8 Aug 1942 John was found guilty of being AWOL from midnight 6 Aug 1942 until 6:00pm on 7 Aug 1942. Fined 10/- (2 days pay) and the automatic forfeiture of a days pay. On 9 Oct 1942 John was admitted to the Northam Camp Hospital, rejoining his unit 10 days later on 19 Oct 1942 and proceeded on a short period of LWOP.
