On 12 Feb 1942 Joseph was posted to the 6th Australian Infantry Battalion (Royal Melbourne Regiment), and on 12 Apr 1942, along with the rest of the battalion he embarked in Port Melbourne aboard City of Paris for Fremantle where he disembarked on 19 Apr 1942.
