Bill enlisted in the RAAF at No. 4 Recvruit Depot RAAF in Busselton on 1 Aug 1942 aged 18, and was mustered as a Trainee Electrician. On 1 Nov 1942 having completed his entry drill training he was posted to the No. 4 School of Technical Training RAAF in Adelaide. On 14 Jan 1943 he was transferred again, this time to No. 3 School of Technical Training RAAF in Sydney. With training behind him, he was posted on 9 Sep 1943 to No. 1 Aircraft Depot RAAF in Laverton, Victoria.
