Original part time mobilization was dated 23 Aug 1940. Arthur was taken on full time, and posted to Fortress Signals Fremantle from 24 Jul 1941 as a Trade Group Classified Operator Signals Grade II. On 2 Mar 1942 he was appointed Lance Corporal and on 29 Sep 1942 he was transferred to the HQ 4th Australian Infantry Division Signals Company.
On 15 Oct 1942 he was admitted to the 2/1st Australian General Hospital before being discharged to duty on 25 Nov 1942. On 2 Mar 1943 he was detached to HQ RAA 4th Division, returning to the Signals Company on 1 Apr 1943. on 27 Apr 1943 he entrained in Perth for Sydney, where on 6 May 1943 he boarded HMT Katoomba for Townsville, disembarking on 18 May.
