Pre War
Employed by the West Australian government Railways from 15 Apr 1910 until he joined the AIF. Began as a porter in Perth before moving to country stations from 9 Oct 1911 where he worked as a cleaner, before on 22 Dec 1912 being employed as a fireman.
Prior military experience was 2 years with the 14th Battery, Field Artillery.
War Service
An original member of the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade's 8th Battery which was raised in Western Australia. On 27 Oct 1914 they boarded HMAT A7 Medic and they sailed at 1:00pm 30 Oct 1914 for Egypt where they undertook further training before on 8 Apr 1915 when they entrained at Mena for Alexandria, and there the next day they boarded HMAT A10 Karoo and sailed for an unknown destination. At 1:30am on 25 Apr 1915 they left Lemnos for Gallipoli and landed their guns at 7:00am the following morning.
