Entering camp, Bill was allocated to the 4th reinforcement draft for the 10th Light Horse Regiment. He travelled with this group to Egypt, and on to Gallipoli. On 4 Jun 1915 he and 19 other reinforcements from Heliopolis base joined the unit proper, who at the time were bivouacked on Walker's Ridge.

On 21 Jun 1915 Bill was hospitalised with influenza, and next day entered 2nd Australian Stationary Hospital at Mudros. Recovered, he was released back to duty on 30 Jun 1915. It is unclear if he returned to Gallipoli or remained on Lemnos until he disembarked from HMHS Gloucester Castle in Alexandria on 10 Aug 1915 suffering with diarrhoea. Ashore he was admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital in Heliopolis later that day.

Transferred to the 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital on 14 Aug 1915, he remained with them until 3 Sep 1915 when he was transferred to the Convalescent Depot.

Bill returned to the 10th Light Horse on the Gallipoli Peninsular on 25 Oct 1915, but by 26 Nov 1915 was back in hospital again, this time seeking assistance for Lymphangitis in his right groin from the 3rd Light Horse Brigade Field Ambulance near Fisherman's Hut. Returned to duty on 1 Dec 1915, Bill was a part of the evacuation that followed later in the month. On 14 Dec he and most of his unit were embarked on lighters that took them off shore to board the SS Abbassieh which took them to Mudros Harbour. From there they embarked on HMT Karoa on 20 Dec 1915, sailing the next day for Alexandria, arriving on the 26th and moving by train the next day to Heliopolis.

On 7 Feb 1916, Bill was again in need of medical assistance with a septic arm (cellulitis of arm), and was admitted to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital. Discharged to duty on 23 Feb 1916 he was marched out to Serapeum, where it appears he remains with his unit until 29 Jul 1916 when he entered 1st Australian Stationary Hospital in Ismailia before being transferred to the 3rd Australian General Hospital at Abbassia on 9 Aug 1916. This time the problem seemed to be of a dental nature, and on 31 Aug 1916 he was released to the base depot and then on 9 Sep 1916 to his unit near Amara.

On 18 Sep 1916 Bill was absent from the 9:00am Stables Parade, and he removed a horse from the lines without permission. Result being that he forfeited 2 days pay. Bill spent a short time with the 3rd Light Horse Brigade Headquarters from 23 Nov 1916 until his next hospital visit on 7 Jan 1917. Seen first by the Anzac Recreation Station, he was sent to the 24th Stationary Hospital at Kantara, and then on 9 Jan 1917 in turn sent to the 14th Australian General Hospital in Abbassia where bilhazia was diagnosed. On 21 Jan 1917 Bill was discharged from hospital and the next day boarded the HMAT A14 Euripides in Suez for Australia for a rest. On his return to Perth he was discharged as medically unfit, by the 5th Military District on 5 May 1917.
